Filmmaker & Video Designer

Sam Sharples is a filmmaker based in Hastings, England. He has a diverse range of work from fictional and documentary films, projections, music videos and more experimental shorts. Often working with others, he blends fact and fiction with an integrity and an emphasis on the visual composition.

Sam went to film school in Newport, South Wales, before undertaking a Masters degree in Documentary at Royal Holloway, University of London. His graduation film installation ‘Nan and John’ was later shown at the National Portrait Gallery in London. In 2019 Sam edited ‘Identity’, a portrait of the singer Poly Styrene, and in 2021 he completed work on the documentary ‘The Romance of Bricks’ alongside the filmmaker Nichola Bruce. More recently in 2022, he was the video designer for ‘The Makropulos Affair’ and in 2024 ‘Death in Venice’ for the Welsh National Opera with Olivia Fuchs and artist Nicola Turner. He is currently putting together a number of projects that continue to mix real-life events in more experimental narrative forms.
